Charter for Compassion

Here is a link to an emerging effort: http://charterforcompassion.com/. Check it out and see what you think.

[Come back once your have viewed the introductory video.]

So, what do you think about this effort? I share it not as an affirmation, not as a criticism, but to inform and let you know this is an emerging movement that is out there. Is it helpful? Is it harmful? Is it relevant? Is it irrelevant? What are both the opportunities and challenges in this movement for pentecostal, evangelical, mainline, and liberal followers of Jesus Christ?

I suspect it is not something about which you are neutral. I am not either. But, I choose not to reveal my perspective now.

I was raised in a fundamental, legalistic baptist church. It was programmed into me that God is love and that he loves everyone. Unfortunately, that is not what was shown as the congregation went out into the world. Many times I have heard, "We don't want those people in our church!" Those people being; recovering addicts, homeless, recovering alcoholics, rehabilitating prostitutes and the like.

These are the people that Jesus surrounded himself with. He came for all of us not for the ultra-religious. I firmly believe that if Christ were walking the earth today in human form, the physical churches that he would associate Himself with would be few and far between.

I said that to say this, as christian we are supposed to separate ourselves from the non-believers (2 Cor. 6:14). This does not mean that we are supposed to ignore or integrate ourselves with groups that do not believe the way that we do. If we are not careful we could very possibly become "The Compromising Church" (Rev 2:12-17) and not "The Compassionate Church" which Christ has called us to be.

Thanks,
Daniel
